Belkyra®/Kybella® has been approved by Health Canada and is the first and only non-surgical treatment that targets and eliminates fat cells to improve the appearance of fullness in the area under the chin. The active ingredient in Belkyra® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Belkyra®/Kybella® non-surgically reduces fat under the chin, resulting in a more contoured neck profile and jawline. It is an injectable prescription medication containing deoxycholic acid as the active ingredient, which breaks down and absorbs fat cells. When injected into the fat under the chin, Belkyra® targets the fat cells, and once the cells are broken down, they can no longer store or accumulate fat. The procedure is highly effective for most patients, with a consistently high patient satisfaction rating. The best results are achieved alongside healthy eating, adequate hydration and regular exercise.
Deoxycholic Acid is a naturally occurring molecule that helps our bodies break down fat during digestion. It is a safe and effective alternative to liposuction with less associated risk factors, downtime, and cost. A double chin can occur at any age, and it’s not exclusive to overweight people. This submental fat is often due to genetics, age, and weight changes. If you are experiencing stubborn double chin fullness, then this may be the perfect treatment for you. When Belkyra®/Kybella® is injected into the fat below the chin or other treatment areas, it dissolves the lipids inside fat cells, causing them to break down. Belkyra®/Kybella® only targets fat cells so that it won’t harm skin or muscle tissue. Treated fat cells gradually leave the body via the liver and lymphatic system without the need for any further intervention.
Avoid alcohol, anti-inflammatory/blood-thinning medications, over-the-counter Aspirin, Motrin, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E or any other essential fatty acids for 24hr before treatment. These items may increase bleeding and bruising. ** Please do not discontinue prescribed blood-thinning medication such as Aspirin, Plavix, Warfarin, or Eliquis unless you have been advised by your prescriber or treatment practitioner
have an active facial infection,
have an active cold sore (or cold sore in the past two weeks)
have a fever, shortness of breath, cough, or new nasal congestion/discharge
tested positive for COVID-19 or any other communicable illness in the past 14 day
After having Belkyra®/Kybella® injections, you can expect to have some swelling in the treatment area for up to 3-4 weeks. This swelling is the result of the body processing dead fat cells. You can minimize swelling through the use of ice packs. Visible fat reduction can be seen about eight weeks after the injections, and these results will generally last until you gain weight.
You may:
Drink plenty of water – this will keep your skin hydrated
Use Tylenol (acetaminophen) for tenderness if needed
Sleep face up and slightly elevated if you experience swelling.
For 4-6 hours: Avoid touching the treatment area(s)
Avoid facial massages or electrical stimulation of the face or treatment area for the next two weeks.
For 24 hours: Avoid strenuous exercise (sprinting, jumping jacks, HIIT, etc.) or Avoid excess alcohol (>2 beverages)
For 48 hours: Avoid exposure to UV light and heat (i.e. prolonged direct sun exposure, sauna, steam, sunbeds, hot showers)
You will experience swelling and bruising for 3-5 days post-treatment, which will begin decreasing over a period of a few weeks. Swelling can last 4-6 weeks.
Many patients need 2-3 treatments for desired results; please schedule a follow-up appointment 4-6 weeks after your first treatment.
Ice packs may be used on the treated area during the first 12 hours. Ice for 15 minutes every hour. However, icing can be discontinued if uncomfortable.
Do NOT massage the injection site. Swelling, tenderness, bruising, numbness, and areas of firm nodules may occur and will resolve over time without intervention. Results are not immediate. Results may be seen as early as 4-6 weeks post-treatment, but full results may not be seen until up to 12 weeks. Numbness can last up to 12 weeks.
Do not wrap the treated area, and do not take anything to prohibit swelling on the day of the treatment or for the days following treatment.
Do not touch the treated area for 6 hours.
Do not apply makeup over injection points until the day after the procedure. Make-up contains high levels of bacteria.
Monitor areas for adverse appearance and report if there are any concerns for timely review and assessment.
You may feel a sense of heaviness following the treatment, especially when lying on your back. This sensation may make you feel short of breath. However, Kybella® does not compromise your airway.
Notify our office if you develop an asymmetric smile or facial muscle weakness, significant swelling, bleeding, pain, dusky discoloration, difficulty swallowing or smiling, or if a fever occurs.
