Our skin changes with age. Skin cell turnover slows, causing a rough, uneven texture and pigment production changes exacerbated by the sun’s harmful UV rays.  It becomes thinner and loses fat. Our veins and bones can be seen more easily. Scratches, cuts, or bumps take longer to heal.

In the dermis, collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid levels decrease, leading to a reduction in skin firmness, elasticity and hydration. This results in fine lines, wrinkles, dullness and uneven skin tone.

Aging of the skin can be natural or chronological aging normally begins in our mid-20 and is determined by genetics and certain internal factors that are uncontrollable. Extrinsic aging accounts for up to 90% of skin aging and is largely controllable.

The most common causes are:

• Sun exposure

• Pollution and environmental stressors

• Lifestyle choices, such as insufficient sleep patterns, smoking and alcohol consumption

• Stress

The good news is that we can reverse some of this damage and minimize future negative effects on the skin.
